The book is designed particularly with the needs in mind of the low-intermediate students of B.A. in Linguistics. Moreover, it can be used by other students interested in linguistic issues and those who wish to examine theory behind practice—not to mention linguistics teachers and lecturers.
It consists of the following nine units: 1. Getting Started: Using the Dictionary, 2. What is language?, 3. What is Linguistics?, 4. Morphology, 5. Lexicology: Word-formation and Word Classes, 6. Phonetics, 7. Phonology, 8. Syntax and 9. Semantics.
Each unit is comprised of two parts and each part begins with a picture related to the issues raised in the unit followed by a number of questions intending to be used as a pre-reading task. Then, a list of general and technical words accompanied by their English definitions and/or some synonymous words is presented. After the main text, there are some comprehension questions and related activities including “Meaning of words”, “multi-meaning words”, “Word classes”, “Word families”, and “Collocations and word Grammar”.
The last part of the book, the appendix, includes A. Common Latin roots, B. Common Greek roots, C. Most Common Prefixes, D. Most Common Suffixes, and finally a Glossary of difficult words and key terms appeared all through the book.
Through the clever use of this book, the students can help themselves to strengthen and expand their linguistic knowledge and develop a wide vocabulary related to the field.
